📱 ShareIt –  Background

1. Origin & Launch

  • ShareIt was originally developed by SHAREit Technologies, a company that started under Lenovo (a Chinese tech company).

  • First released around 2013–2014.

  • It became popular because it allowed fast file sharing without internet, using Wi-Fi Direct technology.

2. Rapid Growth

  • ShareIt quickly became one of the most downloaded apps in the world.

  • Popular especially in India, Indonesia, Russia, and other Asian markets.

  • Key features introduced over time:

    • Phone-to-phone file transfer

    • Cross-platform support (Android, iOS, Windows, Mac)

    • Video player

    • Music player

    • Online content recommendations

Millions used it as an alternative to Bluetooth because it was 200× faster.

3. Controversies

ShareIt faced several issues over the years:

a) Security Problems

  • Cybersecurity researchers reported:

    • Vulnerabilities allowing remote access

    • Insecure file-sharing methods

    • Risks of data leaks

b) Too Many Ads & Bloatware

  • Later versions became filled with:

    • Ads

    • Pop-ups

    • Junk cleaner features

    • App recommendations

    • Games & news tabs

This made many users uninstall it.

4. India Ban (2020)

  • On June 29, 2020, the Indian government banned ShareIt under Section 69A of the IT Act.

  • Reason:

    • National security concerns

    • Data privacy issues

    • Possible Chinese data access

India banned 59 Chinese apps, including:

  • ShareIt

  • TikTok

  • UC Browser

  • WeChat

This ban still affects ShareIt in India.

5. After the Ban

  • ShareIt attempted to rebrand as a global entertainment platform.

  • The company focused more on:

    • Video apps

    • Game centers

  • But its popularity dropped sharply in India due to the ban.

6. Current Status (Worldwide)

  • ShareIt is still available in many countries (outside India).

  • It continues to function as:

    • A file-transfer tool

    • Video & game content platform

But its user base is far smaller compared to its peak days.
